Stress Eating, Sugar Highs and when Food becomes Foe

🧁 Stress Eating, Sugar Highs and when Food Becomes Foe: What do You do when you’re stressed out and eating everything in sight? That’s been my state of mind this past week and all I crave is SUGAR

šŸ© It’s so hard when food feels like foe to get back on track or talk yourself out of ā€œjust one moreā€ late-night snack session. Nights are my hardest… perhaps that’s when the stressors of the day are most loud, or it’s the anticipation of facing them the next day…

šŸ¬ Food is usually a friend to me so I’m keenly aware of when it starts sliding into the danger zone of covering up my emotions with another delicious peanut butter chocolate bite šŸ™ˆ

šŸŖ I don’t have a perfect way of dealing with it and it usually takes several days (sometimes weeks) until my body starts signaling that enough (sugar, chocolate, sprinkles) is enough… but what I usually do first is acknowledge my craving and indulge it to some degree (a few days does not a lifetime of nutrition make and if I talk myself out of something I’ll usually go back after it the next day).
šŸŖ Then, I make a conscious effort not to make any big change promises (like a cleanse, crazy workouts or strict eating plans), but to commit back to habits that make me mentally healthy like:

  • spending some alone time journaling
  • taking a few minutes for meditation
  • time in nature
  • time alone, for me, listening to a podcast, reading or walking helps
  • overall, very little focus on food other than sneaking in a few more healthy vegetables or fruits to get my brain back on those

Stress, depression and anxiety are real – the reasons we experience them are not the same nor are our coping mechanisms but this is mine — food can be my greatest friend or seem like my greatest foe. Okay — I’m off to journal… and take a walk … and hug my pup šŸ’›šŸ’›
